A working week at the Fringe
I was at church on Sunday, at my church, Augustine United, and it's a fringe venue. They have, I think, five venues operating in that space. Every inch of wall space was covered with posters for things that are on.
I don't think I could catch everything that's on even in this one venue, never mind all the stuff that's happening in the street outside. Everything, this ferocious competition that's happening, more and more shows competing for essentially a smaller and smaller audience.
And I thought, "Well, why do I do this?" I can't really give you the answers this week except, I guess, that it's a joy to create.
And this open access, this invitation to everybody to come, if they can find a way and produce their show, is very enticing.
And here I am, just like everyone else, using all the resources I have, which happen to be a cathedral, and some amazing and lovely bell ringers, to create a show that's never been seen before, never been done before, a really new, experimental show.
I'm very, very proud of it.
The other thing is that it's completely different from just about everything else the Fringe has offer.
All those noisy, amazing skilled, vibrant events that intimidate me slightly because I know I just can’t compete with them.
This is a quiet show, me reading a text, bell ringers ringing hand bells in a beautiful, quiet space. I think there's a need for that as well, and I'm proud of what we created.
This week, in my little paid working week film, I'm just going a little bit into the background of how it came about, and what it means to me….
Enjoy if you can…
