This is a strange time in my life as a playwright.
Over the years, I’ve built a back catalogue of work I'm very proud of.
Work that I know still has a lot to say and a huge capacity to give pleasure.
Work that's been produced in all the Scottish theatres, and by almost all the current artistic directors.
Work that’s been successful everywhere.
But now all the artistic directors seem to be saying the same thing:
“We love Jo’s work”, they all say most sincerely, “But we can’t programme it”.
So maybe "strange" is a euphemism for “intensely frustrating”.
But I'll resist the temptation to attack or reproach them.
That's not my job.
My job is to make the most of every opportunity that comes my way.
And this particular opportunity is a very beautiful and magical thing:
To work in St Mary’s Cathedral with the bellringers to create a performance piece involving handbells and the spoken word.
And then to perform it at 2:30 in the afternoon on each of the four Festival Thursdays.
None of us have ever done anything like this before.
Which makes it experimental theatre.
Something completely new.
Something the Fringe is supposed to be all about.
I'll tell you more about what it is tomorrow.
Meantime, book your tickets now…
