This Is The Place
What a wonderful thing it is to create work in a cathedral when you get a backdrop like this…
The bellringers looked at these incredible hangings by Ed Bruce and could totally identify the bell ringing patterns they represent.
These are the handbells they're using to create the equivalent sounds…
And here’s us about to rehearse the whole performance in this magnificent space…
I’m wearing a “Stand By Your Trans” T shirt because I'm feeling so angry at the possibility that the revised guidelines created by the [in]Equality And Human Rights commission in response to the Supreme Court ruling may just be passed without any debate in parliament.
And I think the words I speak and the sounds we make - which are welcoming change, announcing profound change, celebrating the profound changes we are living through, also include the very profound and very necessary changes we have to make in our understanding of what it is to be a man, what it is to be a woman.
The new and profound understandings we need to reach about what it is to be a human being…
And perhaps, among many other things, this performance will also be a protest against all those reactionary so-called feminist forces which are trying to take us back to the 1950s…
But for now the most important thing is the joy of creation.
Or perhaps I should say the joy of co creation:
The joy of collaborating with artists in a very different discipline to create something that's never been done before …
But which I know will give the hugest pleasure.
